On Friday, March 19, the Capitals will take the ice in Vernon Hills for the last time this season when the team hosts the Mosinee Papermakers at 8PM at Glacier Ice Arena. During the second intermission, the winner of the team's $5 raffle for 2 Chicago Blackhawks' tickets will be announced. There is still time to buy raffle tickets! After the game join the Capitals at FIAMMA'S Restaurant in Vernon Hills. Last Friday the Caps were flat against the league-leading Fond du Lac Bears. The team was excited to play after putting together solid efforts in each of the past five games, despite being down ten players, mostly due to injuries. But against the Bears, according to head coach Warren Sundt, "We were flat, and you can't be flat against the best team in the league." It was one of "those" nights. The last three meetings against Fond du Lac resulted in close games, but after going down 6-0 in the first period, things didn't look good for the Capitals. The Capitals were downed by a final score of 10-3. Tickets for the Capitals' final home game of the season are on sale now and at the ticket counter starting at 7:15PM on Saturday. Caps slay Ice Dogs; back home this weekend to face Bears The hockey season may be winding down, but the Vernon Hills Capitals are not. On Saturday vs. the Fox Cities Ice Dogs, the Capitals started goalie (#29) Danny (Fish) Codd. And Danny was on his game, turning away 38 Ice Dogs' shots en route to an 8-4 victory. The Dogs scored first on a power play with 15:14 on the clock in the first period. It took 10 minutes for the Capitals to answer back with a goal by (#27) Dale Michonski assisted by (#9) Erich Klemm and captain (#10) Bobby Siers. The first period ended with the Capitals down 2-1. The Capitals came out of the locker room for the second period with a mission to take down the Dogs. Co-captain (#22) Mike Barnes led the team with a 2nd period hat-trick. (#2) Chris Schink and (#3) Mike Bolt also scored goals to put the Capitals on top 6-4 after two periods. The third period was all Capitals. Goals scored by (#7) Matt Greenwood and (#10) Bobby Siers finished off the Ice Dogs and gave the Capitals an 8-4 victory. "Ve Vin!" as described by Swiss native (#11) Fabio Schwarz. Birthday wishes went out to Glacier Ice Dog Jake Camp, who visited the Capitals' locker room for autographs before the game. Jake brought some of his friends who asked (#18) Kalle (Swedish Meatball) Larsson if he was going to "drop the gloves" during the game. Kalle's answer was, "I am going to work 'the Swedish head fake' and put on the dangle versus the Ice Dogs." There are only two home games left for the Capitals. On Friday, March 12th the Capitals take on the top team in the GLHL, the Fond du Lac Bears at 8pm. This game is sponsored by Fatman's Bowl in Green Oaks. Make sure you stop by and say hi to the great folks at Fatman's, and tell them the "Caps" sent you! Tickets for both remaining home games are on sale now and at the ticket counter starting at 7:15PM on game days. Caps fall to Bears; return to Glacier on Saturday to host Ice Dogs This past Saturday at home in Vernon Hills, the Capitals were looking to give the league-leading Fond du Lac Bears a game and they got one. The last two times the same two teams met, both times at the Bears' home rink, the Capitals lost in two rounds of shootouts. This game started with the Bears scoring first, a goal by Mike McMahon with just 1:43 ticked off the clock. Caps' captain Bobby Siers (#10) scored at the 14:17 minute of the first period, but the Capitals headed to the locker room after the first period down After an inspiring speech during the intermission, the Capitals came out firing. Team scoring leader Zack Kozak (#23) tallied a hat-trick in the second period. But Fondy's leading scorer Ryan Blick put the Bears up 5-4 after 2 periods. The third period began with the Capitals' Dale (Guido) Michonski (#27) blazing past the Bears and burying a goal with only a 1:40 being ticked off the clock. The Capitals' Zach Kozak (#23) was looking to finish off the game with a "Gordie Howe Hat-Trick" by squaring up at center ice with the Bears' Ken McKay (#9). Kozak won that battle but was unable to tally an assist. The Capitals' goalie Doug Bair (#20) was off his game a bit and was unable to fend off the high-scoring Bears. The game ended with the Bears winning 9-7. This clinched the league title for the Bears. The Capitals are now down eight players, mostly due to injuries. Unfortunately, this occured after the December 31 roster freeze. The Capis are looking to avenge their road loss vs. the Fox Cities Ice Dogs this Saturday Night at 8pm at Glacier Ice Arena. The Capitals are raffling off two tickets for the Chicago Blackhawks game vs. the Phoenix Coyotes on March 23 at the United Center. $5 raffle tickets will be on sale at the team's three remaining home games. Remember, kids wearing a hockey jersey get in free to all Caps games! Caps Earn Three Points with a Mixed Bag After a rough road trip to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, in which the team surrendered two games, the Capitals picked up 3 points this past weekend in three consecutive games. The team's weekend itinerary included games against the Fond du Lac Bears, the West Bend Bombers, and the Calumet Wolverines. This weekend marked the first time in franchise history that the team played three games in as many days. On Friday night, the Capitals traveled to Fond du Lac to take on their GLHL Southern Division opponents, the Bears. This trip would mark the second to last road game for the team. The game was tight, as both teams gave their best efforts. The teams ended each period knotted up. After one period of play the score stood matched at 1-1; after two periods of play the score stood at 3-3. The Capitals held the lead for much of the third period but were charged with two penalties giving the Bears a two-man advantage late in game. The high powered offense of the Bears took care of business as they were able to tie the game at 6-6 before the end of regulation play. The Capitals were unable to outwit the Bears in the second shootout of the season between the two teams as Fond du Lac outscored the Capitals in the contest. The Capitals did however pick up one point in divisional standings for the shootout loss. Saturday night on home ice, the Capitals took on the West Bend Bombers, a team that is quickly becoming a true Southern Division rival for the Capitals. The Capitals seemed to be out-worked the entire game by the Bombers and surrendered their third loss of the season to the team with a final score of 7-4. On Sunday the Capitals moved to finish their three game series of play as they faced off against the Calumet Wolverines, a team to which the Capitals suffered a major loss just one week prior in Michigan. The matinee started off with the ceremonial puck drop by Vernon Hills' Mayor Roger Byrne. The Capitals got going with a quick start in the game scoring early in the first period. After one period of play the Capitals went into the first intermission with a 2-0 lead. The Wolverines answered back in the second period and knotted things up at two. The third period started off with both teams having two tallies on the board; however it was all Capitals in the third period. The Capitals scored four unanswered goals in the third period on their way to picking up two points and their sixth win of the season. 5 Caps (plus 2 alternates) named to GLHL All-Star Team! The Capitals are pleased to announce that five members have been named to the GLHL's 2009-2010 South Division All-Star Team. Representing Vernon Hills in the GLHL All-Star Game on January 29 in Green Bay will be: goalie Doug Bair; forwards Zack Kozak and Mike Barnes; and defensemen JP Ledwidge and Pat McCadams. In addition, Dale Michonski was named an alternate foward and Kalle Larsson an alternate defenseman. Saturday, December 12: Vernon Hills 4 Green Bay 3 Capitals top Green Bay Deacons The Vernon Hills Capitals returned home on Saturday, December 12 to take on a Great Lakes Hockey League South Division foe, the Green Bay Deacons. Going into the game the Capitals record stood at 3-4-1, and the team was looking to break even before heading into the holiday break. The Capitals were plagued by injury and illness heading into the game against Green Bay, but sought motivation from new head coach Kelly Gee. After a beautiful rendition of the National Anthem by Jacqueline Branch, and with Gee's game plan instilled, the team controlled the Deacons for a majority of the first period. The Capitals were able to notch the first tally of the game as Shawn McCloud scored an unassisted goal 7:36 into the first period. The Capitals, still buzzing from the first goal, were able to post another at 10:22 into the first period on a goal from Dale Michonski which was assisted by Rob Rosmis and Fabio Schwarz. The Capitals were unable to hold the two goal lead until the first intermission, though, as the Deacons were able to climb within one as they scored at 18:28 into the first period. The Capitals came out in the second period looking to establish a better offensive zone presence. Zach Kozak continued with the "hot-hand," as he demonstrated his own offensive zone flair by scoring a goal on assists from Pat Mcadams and Dale Michonski. The goal moved the Capitals lead to 3-1. The Deacons, however, were able to respond late in the second period with a goal of their own to bring the score to 3-2 heading into the second intermission. The Capitals scored their fourth and final goal of the game at 7:22 into the third period on a goal by defenseman man Ben Loss on assists from Dale Michonski and Fabio Schwarz. The Capitals struggled to play with a lead and allowed the Deacons to post a goal at 14:43 into the third period. Strong goaltending by Doug Bair and sturdy defensive zone play were keys to fending off the Deacons' six-man attack when they pulled their goalie late in the third period. The Capitals edged the Deacons and picked up two important South Division points in their 4-3 victory over Green Bay. The Capitals now head into their holiday break with a solid 4-4-1 record and 9 GLHL South Division Points. The Capitals return home on Friday, January 8 at 8PM vs. the West Bend Bombers. The Capitals were welcomed by large crowds at both visiting arenas. The Capitals, fresh off of Thanksgiving dinner, took the ice against the Papermakers Friday night in Mosinee's 2009-2010 home opener. The Papermakers' fans were, without a doubt, ready to see the season get underway as they welcomed the Capitals to the ice surface with a vocal display of "boos." The Papermakers struck first in the game, sending the Capitals into the locker room after the first period looking for answers to a flurry of offensive zone activity posted by the Papermakers. The second period rendered much of the same as the Papermakers mounted a solid offensive attack upon the Capitals, outscoring the visitors 4-1 in the period. The Caps' road legs seemed to wear off too late as the team fought to post two goals in the third period, outscoring the Papermakers 2-0 in the final period of regulation. Though the rally was not enough to win the game, it gave the Capitals momentum going into their game Saturday night. In statistics for Friday night's game against Mosinee, Mike Barnes scored the first Capitals goal on an assist from Zack Kozak. Zach Kozak tallied the second Capitals goal and was unassisted in his effort. The third Capitals goal was scored by Eric Klemm on an assist from defenseman Kalle Larsson. The tables turned for the Capitals on Saturday night as they took the ice against the Eagle River Falcons. The game was also the Falcons' home opener, and the ERRA Ice Arenawith the scent of aged lumber and the brisk indoor temperaturewas filled with anxious Eagle River fans. An amazing vintage hockey atmosphere was set as the two teams squared off for the opening faceoff. The setting could have been the background for Stompin' Tom Collins' song, "Good Old Hockey Games" music video. The first period went quick and left the Capitals shorthanded as they went into the locker room for the intermission down by a goal. Spirits were recharged during the break however as the Capitals posted 4 goals in the second period. Koroll coached Capitals' rookie Sondro Kolb to a spot in the "Wicked Grille Hall-of-Fame" as Sandro was able to completely finish the un-eatable "Wicked Burger" and all of the fries that came with the burger. For travelers, Sandro and C.J.'s picture of this event can be viewed at the Wicked Bar and Grille making Eagle River, Wisconsin a must-visit destination. The Capitals return home this Friday (December 4) at 8PM vs. Oregon (Wisc.) Stampede. Three weeks ago the Caps thrilled their home-opener crowd with a 6-5 shoot-out victory over Oregon. The Capitals "Press Room" will re-open for the Oregon game at 7:30PM on Friday.
