January 3, 2009: Caps post solid effort in loss to defending league champs The Capitals put forth one of their strongest efforts of the season Saturday night in a 4-2 loss to the defending Great Lakes Hockey League champion Green Bay Deacons in Green Bay. On Friday night in Vernon Hills, the Caps dropped an 8-4 decision to the West Bend Bombers. After a trip to Madison on Friday (January 9), the Capitals will return home on Saturday (January 10) to host the first place Fond du Lac Bears at 8:20PM at Glacier Ice Arena in Vernon Hills. December 27, 2008: Caps fall to Eagle River, Mosinee The Capitals dropped a 7-6 decision to the Eagle River Falcons Saturday night in Eagle River, Wisconsin. The loss marked the fifth time in ten games this season that the Caps have lost by a single goal. On Friday, the Capitals fell to the Mosinee Papermakers 8-6 in Mosinee, Wisconsin. Vernon Hills silenced a boisterous crowd with three quick goals to begin the game. But the Papermakers fought back to tie the game in the second period. The lead changed hands several times before Mosinee sealed its third victory of the season with a third period penalty shot goal. The Capitals return home Friday to host the West Bend Bombers at 8PM at Glacier Ice Arena in Vernon Hills. December 20, 2008: Caps drop two one-goal games The Capitals dropped two one-goal games this past weekend, marking the third and fourth times this season the Caps have lost by just one goal. On Friday night, the team lost to the defending league champion Green Bay Deacons in overtime in Green Bay. The overtime loss was good for one point in the Great Lakes Hockey League South Division standings. On Saturday night, the first place Fond du Lac Bears outlasted the Capitals in Vernon Hills. The team returns to Wisconsin next weekend for two road games: Friday night in Mosinee and Saturday in Eagle River. The Capitals' next home game is on January 2 against West Bend. December 13, 2008: Madison gives Caps the blues The Madison Blues defeated the Vernon Hills Capitals 7-2 Saturday night in a Great Lakes Hockey League South Division showdown at Glacier Ice Arena. Captain Arik Lebda scored twice for the Capitals, including on the first shot of the game just 7 seconds into the first period. But Blues goalie Alex Wescott stopped 31 of 33 shots, and Andy Cripps scored three times to lead Madison to its fourth victory of the season (click here for the box score). The Capitals return to the ice twice this weekend on the road Friday night in Green Bay against the defending league champion Deacons, and at home Saturday night against first place Fond du Lac. During the game against Fond du Lac, a number of contests and events will be held to benefit Angel On My Shoulder, a not-for-profit cancer support foundation. The 1-5 Capitals find themselves in an early-season hole, but with 20 games remaining more than 3/4 of the season the team is not out of playoff contention yet. The Capitals play back-to-back games in each of the next five weekends and can turn things around with a few key victories. December 6, 2008: Caps drop heartbreaker to defending league champs The Capitals dropped a heartbreaker to the defending league champion Green Bay Deacons 7-6 Saturday night before another exuberant crowd at Glacier Ice Arena in Vernon Hills. The Capitals' homestand continues next weekend when the team hosts the Madison Blues on Saturday at 8:20PM. November 29, 2008: Caps fall to Fondy; host Green Bay this weekend The Capitals were outgunned by the first place Fond du Lac Bears Saturday night in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. Next weekend, the team returns to Glacier Ice Arena in Vernon Hills to host the defending GLHL champion Green Bay Deacons on Saturday at 8:20PM. November 15, 2008: Caps outlast West Bend Bombers 43 Saturday night, pick up franchise's first victory The Vernon Hills Capitals outlasted the West Bend (Wisconsin) Bombers 4-3 Saturday night to notch the franchise's first victory. The team's three captains led the way. After falling behind 2-0, alternate captain Bobby Siers scored twice in less than one minute to knot the score halfway into the second period. The Capitals fell behind again before captain Arik Lebda tied the score at 3, and alternate captain Mike Scribner netted the game-winner with 6:51 left in the third period. The victory improves the Capitals' record to 1-2, good for third place in the Great Lakes Hockey League's South Division. The Capitals play one more game on the road, November 29 in Fond du Lac, before returning to Glacier Ice Arena on December 6 to host the defending GLHL champion Green Bay Deacons. November 14, 2008: Caps fall to Fondy Bears 94 Friday night The Capitals were outshot 45-32 by the first place Fond du Lac Bears en route to a 9-4 defeat in Fond du Lac Friday night. The two teams face off again on November 29 in Fond du Lac. November 8, 2008: Caps drop home opener to Portage Lake 87 ![]() The Capitals of Vernon Hills etched history on Saturday, November 8 at the Glacier Ice Arena. The Capitals saw the puck drop on their first game of the inaugural 2008-2009 season. Vernon Hills is the newest franchise in the historic Great Lakes Hockey League, a league mainly comprised of teams from Wisconsin and Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The Capitals were treated to a house full of exuberant fans who were ready to see Great Lakes Hockey League action. The team faced off against the young and talented Portage Lakes Pioneers from Houghton, Michigan. The Capitals fell to the Pioneers in a third period heartbreaker. The Capitals were downed by a single goal and lost by a score of 8-7 (click here for the box score). The Capitals will seek redemption upon the Pioneers later in the season, but Capitals General Manager Warren Sundt was satisfied with the way his team overcame adversity and goal deficits in just the first game of the season. The Capitals will play their first two GLHL Southern Division games this weekend against the Bears of Fond du Lac and the Bombers of West Bend. The Capitals will hit the practice ice this week at the Glacier Ice Arena looking to build upon their first game with hopes of reaching success this coming weekend. November 7, 2008: Vernon Hills Capitals on 95.1 WIIL Rock Four Capital players were on Tom and Lisa Morning Show. The players that were there were Arik Lebda (#22 Captain), Bobby Siers (#10 Alternate Captain), Aaron Schwartz (#16), and John Murphy (#24). They were talking about the Home Opener today and the Shoot at Haro event that will happen between the 2nd and 3rd intermission. New hockey tradition starting in Vernon Hills October 29, 2008: The Vernon Hills Capitals will make their season debut next weekend as a member of the Great Lakes Hockey League, a top-notch semi-pro loop which will begin its 71st season. The 10-team, two-division GLHL features teams from Michigan and Wisconsin, with the Vernon Hills organization the first team from Illinois to join the league. "We're planning on bringing an exciting brand of hockey, as well as affordable, family-friendly entertainment, to Vernon Hills," said Warren Sundt, an Antioch resident who brought the team to Vernon Hills.
