Friday, December 4: Vernon Hills 8 Oregon (Wisc.) 3 Saturday, December 5: Vernon Hills 4 West Bend (Wisc.) 5 Capitals Split in Divisional Play Last Weekend After a great victory over the Eagle River Falcons a week earlier, the Capitals had high aspirations of claiming two victories over GLHL South Division opponents. Victories in both contests against the Oregon Stampede and West Bend Bombers would have solidified the Capitals as a front-runner in the South Division of the Great Lakes Hockey League. All was not lost, though, as the Capitals split the two game set and picked up two additional standings points. The Capitals first contest last past weekend was against the Oregon Stampede. The last meeting between the two teams ended in a Capitals shootout victory. This game, however, lacked the drama of the last, but was a great indicator of the Capitals' improvement. The score would end up being 8-3 in favor of the Capitals after regulation time expired. The Capitals held the Stampede to only 32 shots for the game and allowed only one goal per period. The highlight of the game was without a doubt the second period as the Capitals put on a scoring show, posting five goals in the period. At one point in the second period Oregon did tie the contest, but the tying goal seemed to be what the Capitals needed to rally toward their third victory of the season. Great Lakes Hockey League rookie Zack Kozak was able to post a hat-trick during the game as he seemed to have Oregon goaltender Aaron CromptonÕs number. The Capitals traveled to West Bend on Saturday night to play the Bombers at the Kettle Moraine Ice Center. The two teams seem to be becoming bigger rivals each time they face off against each other. The first period of the game was a battle as both teams pushed hard to score. The Capitals were successful in their first period scoring campaign as they headed into the locker room after one period of play with a 1-0 lead. The second period was without a doubt full of intensity and drama as the rivalry between the two teams was on full display. The Capitals posted three quick tallies in the second period taking a 4-0 lead. However, the Capitals struggled to play with the lead and the Bombers posted four unanswered tallies of their own to move the teams to a 4-4 tie after two periods of play. The third period had the feeling of sudden-death overtime as a stale-mate continued between the two teams for most of the period. A Capitals neutral zone turnover lead to the Bombers winning goal being scored with just 3:51 left in regulation time. The Capitals were unable to post another point in the game and fell to the Bombers by a final score of 5-4. The Capitals will take on the West Bend Bombers on three more occasions this season and will travel twice to Oregon to take on the Stampede. In other notables, the Capitals were hosted after Saturday night's game by the Wicked Bar and Grille in Eagle River, Wisconsin. GLHL veteran C.J. Koroll coached Capitals' rookie Sondro Kolb to a spot in the "Wicked Grille Hall-of-Fame" as Sandro was able to completely finish the un-eatable "Wicked Burger" and all of the fries that came with the burger. For travelers, Sandro and C.J.'s picture of this event can be viewed at the Wicked Bar and Grille making Eagle River, Wisconsin a must-visit destination. The Capitals return home tomorrow night (Saturday, December 12) at 8PM vs. the Green Bay Deacons. The Capitals "Press Room" will re-open at 7:30PM on Saturday. The "Press Room" is a team fundraiser where fans can watch the game in a heated private room or stand right behind the goal and get an up-close view of the action. All guests must be 21 to purchase "Press Room" passes. Tickets are on sale now and at the ticket counter starting at 7:15PM. ![]() For more information about the Capitals, please visit www.VernonHillsCapitals.com!
